A major financial institution needed a branded, event-day quiz platform for their campus programme — deployed simultaneously across two physical locations, with live leaderboards visible on TV screens and a secure admin dashboard for staff.
My brief was to set up the quiz for a company's internal campus event using Mentimeter — a third-party tool the client was already planning to use. I started configuring it and quickly saw the problem: Mentimeter's customisation options didn't come close to what we actually needed. The design felt generic, the feature set was limited, and there was no way to enforce the branding or quiz logic the event required.
Nobody asked me to build an alternative. But I spent the time between the brief and the next meeting doing exactly that — a fully custom quiz platform, built from scratch with AI assistance, designed specifically around the event's requirements. When I showed it in the meeting as an option, the reaction was immediate. They dropped Mentimeter on the spot.
The custom platform ran the full quiz across both campuses simultaneously. Around 600 participants completed the experience. Gold medals were awarded to perfect scorers. The client had something that felt like it was made for them — because it was.
